Tribute Project: Honoring an artist’s legacy through contemporary design and storytelling

Date

December 2024

Location

Istituto Marangoni Miami

This project is deeply personal, an homage to my grandparents, who have always been avid admirers of Slim Aarons' photography. Their homes are adorned with his works, and the photo books they have gifted me over the years have fostered a shared admiration for his world of “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.”

To bring this vision to life, I embarked on an in-depth exploration of Slim Aarons’ work, researching his iconic photographs, the destinations he captured, and the vibrant stories they told. Each image was a snapshot of elegance—a narrative of high-society leisure set against backdrops like St. Tropez, Palm Beach, and St. Moritz.

I distilled the essence of Aarons’ aesthetic into a series of moodboards. These moodboards became the foundation of the project, encapsulating the unique allure of each destination: the pastel elegance of Palm Beach and the snowy, wintry charm of St. Moritz—all translated into visual inspiration that helped bring Aarons’ photographs to life as tangible, wearable art.

In St. Tropez, I crafted playful bikini bottoms that captured the carefree Mediterranean spirit immortalized in his photographs. For Palm Beach, I designed pastel-striped towels that echoed the Colony Hotel's whimsical poolside charm. In St. Moritz, I focused on cozy après-ski turtlenecks, inspired by Aarons’ depiction of the glamorous winter elite.

I envisioned these mini collections forming the foundation of a larger brand. Each destination could inspire an entire line, with bespoke boutiques tailored to its aesthetic. For example, the boutique in St. Moritz would carry the subtle scent of cedarwood, crisp mountain air, and a hint of bergamot. Furniture would combine plush, fur-lined seating in muted tones with sleek, dark wood accents, while brass and glass details would add a touch of opulence. The walls would feature Aarons’ winter photographs in gilded frames, creating a gallery-like ambiance.

Ultimately, this project became the foundation of a broader vision—a lifestyle brand that reimagines Slim Aarons' world across fashion, décor, and curated experiences. At its core, however, it remains a tribute to my grandparents, whose love for Aarons’ work inspired me to create something equally meaningful and enduring.
